A beautiful piece of literature by a great saint of the church. St. John of the Cross was a man in search of Christ, a true follower of the ways of God. By only simple observation, it seems that his entire life was swallowed up in the glory and majesty of God, and we have the great privilege of peering into that relationship through his written works. This is a book describing the search of a lovesick soul for her wonderful bridegroom. A truly remarkable spring for anyone desiring a deeper life with God. May you be blessed as you listen to this book! 1. Language: English. Narrator: Robert J. Shaw. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/088322/bk_acx0_088322_sample.mp3. Robert Louis Stevenson's lengthy short story 'The Pavilion on the Links' was considered by Arthur Conan Doyle to be 'the first short story in the world'. This unsettlingly nerve-racking tale is every bit as chilling as its much wider known follower ,The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and at the time of its publication was every bit as successful. Stevenson makes the choice in the story of having two fairly unpleasant characters for his main protagonists. Both deeply antipathetic to the rest of humankind, he is wickedly funny about the two men’s friendship, which, as the narrator himself confesses, is 'scarcely a companionship, but a coexistence of unsociability'. Armed with these delightfully awful heroes, Stevenson embarks on a startlingly unpredictable foray into the hinterland of the Scottish landscape he knew so well. It was first published in 1880 in The Cornhill Magazine, and then a revised version appeared in the collection of tales published by Stevenson in 1882 entitled The New Arabian Nights, which was seen by many to be the beginning of the literary genre that became the English short story. 1. Peace. Where does it come from?In John 14:27, Jesus says, "Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you." The follower of Christ believes peace comes only from Him - both in this world and in the next - through the hearing of His word, by the power of His Spirit. His Word makes me wise (Matthew 7:24). It gives me fellowship with Him (Luke 8:21). It sanctifies me (John 17:17). Indeed, it is the very source of my faith (Romans 10:17).Sacred Sleep was created with this biblical model of peace in mind. It is a unique experience that will help you get the rest you need while deepening your faith and drawing you closer to God.Combined with a scholarly introduction by Robert J. Bagley, this groundbreaking sleep aid contains some of the most well-loved verses in Scripture, including the Sermon on the Mount, The Christmas Story, and Psalm 119. These passages are presented with soothing music to allow the water of the Word and worship to wash over you every time you experience them (1 Samuel 10:5-6).Our prayer is that you will not only obtain "sound wisdom and discretion" from these verses (Proverbs 3:21), but that “you will [also] lie down and your sleep will be sweet.” (Proverbs 3:24)So relax and turn off the day (Matthew 6:34). Invite the Lord to lead you into a peaceful time of rest today with Sacred Sleep: Bible Verses for Bedtime.Performed by six-time number one Amazon best-selling narrator, Steve Cook 1. In this hour, Harvard trained brain scientist Jill Bolte Taylor found an unusual path to growth. She describes her stroke, the weird euphoria it caused and her long process of recovery in her book, My Stroke of Insight, and in this conversation with Anne Strainchamps. Next, Richard Davidson is a neuro-psychologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a longtime friend of the Dalai Lama. He tells Steve Paulson about observing contemplatives with a brain scanner. And we learn what Seneca thought was the secret of happiness. Then, we hear a round-up of some of the latest research into happiness, from economist Richard Layard, and psychologists Robert Biswas-Diener and Sonja Lyubormirsky. And an Islamic mystic's take on the secret of happiness. After that, Satish Kumar, a former Jain monk and follower of Ghandi, tells Steve Paulson that the secret to a stress-free life is to take it at a walking pace. Kumar is the author of The Buddha and the Terrorist and editor of the eco-spiritual magazine, Resurgence.Following that, Richard Schoch is the author of The Secrets of Happiness: Three Thousand Years of Searching for the Good Life. He tells Jim Fleming that the way we think about happiness today is a thin, watery version of a deep and complex subject. Finally, we're giving the last word on happiness to the great American soul singer Al Green. He's spent his life testifying on stage and in the pulpit to the power of grace, love and happiness. Al Green talks with Steve Paulson, and of course, we hear him sing. [Broadcast Date: January 1, 2010] 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jim Fleming. Commemorating the 25th anniversary of the siege at Waco, and a tie-in to the upcoming Spike TV mini-series, an updated reissue of the critically acclaimed A Place Called Waco by Branch Davidian survivor David Thibodeau. For the first time ever, a survivor of the Waco massacre tells the inside story of Branch Davidians, David Koresh, and what really happened at the religious compound in Texas. When he first met the man who called himself David Koresh, David Thibodeau was drumming for a rock band that was going nowhere fast. Intrigued and frustrated with a stalled music career, Thibodeau gradually became a follower and moved to the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. He remained there until April 19, 1993, when the compound was stormed and burnt to the ground after a 51-day standoff. In this book, Thibodeau explores why so many people came to believe that Koresh was divinely inspired. We meet the men, women, and children of Mt. Carmel. We get inside the day-to-day life of the community. Thibodeau is brutally honest about himself, Koresh, and the other members, and the result is a revelatory look at life inside a cult. But Waco is just as brutally honest when it comes to dissecting the actions of the United States government. Thibodeau marshals an array of evidence, some of it never previously revealed, and proves conclusively that it was our own government that caused the Waco tragedy, including the fires. The result is a memoir that feels like a thriller, with each moment taking us closer to the eventual inferno. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Robert Fass.
